In Japan, there are roughly 200,000 dead bodies each year for which the cause of death is unclear. Only about one tenth of those have autopsies performed on them by a forensic pathologist. There are countries in the world where nearly 90% of such cases have autopsies performed, so this incredibly low percentage has made Japan a society of deaths of unknown causes.
In order to break out of that situation, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare decided to start trials of an organization that will primarily handle solving causes of death, similar to coroners in England, or medical examiners in the United States.
With the authority to direct police to investigate and to perform autopsies, they are experts in uncovering the facts leading to a death. The capable bureaucrats of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare call in forensic pathologists who have worked in equivalent organizations overseas and assemble a team! However, because they cannot spare the personnel to create a team immediately, they gather up aspiring forensic pathologists who will be the ones to take on the challenge of identifying the causes of death!

“Loved one” is a term the forensic pathologists use to refer to a dead body. Using the hints left on the body, they will take on many difficult cases in this human mystery drama. They will listen to the unspoken words of the dead who were once someone’s significant other, or someone’s family, and use their scientific knowledge and sharp insight to uncover the truth. This story follows the growth of this team of unique individuals and will overturn conventional wisdom about determining the cause of death in Japan, which has been mocked as a society where the cause of death is unknown.
